Research perspective
Traditionally, the word "multimedia" in computer science is meant to refer text, audio, 2D still image, and 3D movie images. My recent work is to provide extend the data types to include three-dimensional graphics. For a data type to be a full-fledged, the data type must have a set of operations defined on it; e.g., creation, destruction, input, output, etc.

In a similar vain, a multimedia data type is fully fledged if it has such operations as input, output, indexing, linking, similarity-based search, copyright management, compression, summarizing, storage, authentication, copyright protection, tamper detection, and others. In this sense, only text data can be considered a full fledged data type. Even 2D image data type does not have all of these operations defined. Situation gets sketchier for audio and movie, especially for such operations as indexing, searching, and linking, mainly due to their temporal nature.

What I intend to do is to provide many, if not all, of the operations listed above for 3D models. A "3D model" here could include shape, shape attributes (such as color, vertex normal vector, etc.), animation parameters, and others.

Being more specific, I have been working on watermarking 3D models (such as a VRML model) by using their shape, shape attributes, and other properties. I have also been working on compression techniques for 3D models, especially for CAD models including curves and surfaces. Compression of CAD data is another subject that I have been working on.
